Team Girl comic is a Glasgow-based group of cartoonists from a variety of backgrounds, ages and interests. We self publish comic books on a regular basis. Our aim is to expand as a collective group and improve the presence of women and girls in the underground comic scene, as well as to entertain! Our stories range from autobiographical to the more whimsical and surreal.
We are strictly non-elitist and invite anyone female to contribute to the comic, whether they create art professionally or just fancy giving it a go.
FAQs
How good do I have to be to join Team Girl Comic? In terms of experience, we want to be as inclusive as possible. If you are a cartooning regular looking for a new project, someone who likes drawing comics but is a bit shy about them, or you’ve never done much drawing before but have a great idea for a strip, we welcome your contribution. Obviously you have to have some belief in yourself and your own ability! But amazing drawing skills do not necessarily make a good comic strip, it’s being able to effectively communicate your ideas that’s important. We enjoy printing great stories told in a wide variety of styles. Is Team Girl Comic feminist? Team Girl has emerged from the excitement of the recent rise in profile of female cartoonists (and comics/ graphic novels in general), and also the frustration of the limited and often sexist portrayal of women that is still prevalent in comics today, particularly in underground or ‘small press’. Comics have huge potential as an artistic medium and literary form, but their world can often seem alienating to female readers and creators. We want to be part of the change, and in this respect Team Girl Comic is feminist. However our core reason for being is to have fun and our comics don’t have to have a feminist or political theme to them. We make comics by women for everyone. Can men contribute to the comic? Sorry, but at the moment the answer is no. It’s not that we don’t like you, it’s just that we are all about promoting comics by women and girls, it’s our ‘unique selling point’ if you will. Introducing men, at least at this early stage, would take away from our image and core values. However, if you are a male cartoonist, we’d still like to be your friend! Everyone on the scene should stick together and help each other out.
Is Team Girl Comic suitable for children? In terms of content, our first two issues were suitable for children, bar the odd swear word here and there. After being asked this question several times we’ve decided to ask contributors to avoid this in future issues. Children might not understand or enjoy every story in TGC, but we hope there will always be something in there they will like. The comics by our youngest cartoonists are particularly popular with kids.
